Rumor: iPhone OS 3.0 to include video editing tools

Rumor: iPhone OS 3.0 to include video editing tools

It might seem like a big leap from a phone with no real video capabilities to one that will trim and clip your creations on the fly, but that's the implication of a few graphic elements sussed out of the iPhone 3.0 firmware by Ben at benm.at (original site in German, translation here). He's spotted some art resources that seem to show editing, scrubbing and clip functions in the next version of the iPhone's firmware.

Note that Engadget Mobile pointed out an "Upload my Video" button in the MobileMe area of a 3.0 iPhone last month.

Even though there are jailbreak apps now that leverage the iPhone's camera for video use (ustream and Qik, in particular), Apple hasn't yet shown its hand on video directions in 3.0. Giving users the ability to edit their video on-device before uploading, emailing or MMS-ing would be a spectacular feature, and there's a lot to like about the idea of a pinch/stretch UI for managing a video timeline. iPhone, meet iMovie? Still, if you planned to do a lot of video work on your phone, a 32 GB model with a faster processor and better camera would be ideal...

Thanks, Ben

iPhone: Carriers Does Not Like Skype for iPhone

T-Mobile in Germany, as well as Roger in Canada, have already announced that they might prevent their local users to use Skype on iPhone or iPod Touch for calling over Wi-Fi. Despite the fact that Apple locked the application to prevent any usage over 3G network, VoIP applications are a real danger for most carriers. Indeed, any calling time over the subscription-included pre-paid period is a jackpot for carrier and can quickly become expensive for users. So, one can easily understand that users at home might save a lot of their subscription-included time by calling via VoIP (Skype or any forthcoming applications).
while it seems clear that in Germany and in Canada, carriers distributing the iPhone are against this application, in other European countries, most carriers are surprisingly silent... no reactions from Orange, SFR, O2, etc...

New Palm Pre apps underscore Apple's iPhone limitations
While third-party apps are being trumpeted as the iPhone's strength, key Palm Pre demos this week were designed to highlight their restrictions by taking advantage of those precise things that Apple won't allow.

Rumor: Xserve refresh coming up soon

MacRumors is calling attention to a PC World report: new Nehalem-based Xserve models are expected soon, based on a slipup on Apple's Hong Kong site (gotta watch those ALT tags, folks!). The replacement units for Apple's Harpertown and Penryn Xeon-based rackmount gear should be able to leverage the new chip architecture and power management features to supercharge parallel operations in the Snow Leopard version of Mac OS X Server.

If you're in the market for Xserves, would you buy now for a known quantity or wait for the latest and greatest? Let us know below.

FCC asked to investigate Skype for iPhone restriction
Since Tuesday, Skype for iPhone has been downloaded more than a million times—that’s a rate of six downloads a second, according to the company. All this despite the fact the software only works via the iPhone’s Wi-Fi connection, and not AT&T’s 3G network. That restriction has angered some, who have argued that the practice is anti-competitive.

"Gucci with a touchpad"
Even if the recession has been deepening, businesses and consumers are willing to pay for something that they need, or something that they want very badly. A BlackBerry is a status symbol of sorts. It is certainly a device that has utility. The iPhone shares those elements and is also a much more powerful symbol of the owner’s prestige.
