Steve Jobs impersonators take over NBC on Chuck and 30 Rock

It seems that Hollywood is beginning to miss Steve Jobs almost as much as we are. This is especially true for two of NBC's hit comedy shows; "30 Rock" and "Chuck." Both were new this week and overflowing with appreciation for Stevie J.

For most Apple fans it is easy to spot when many TV shows and movies feature Apple gear. The most recent episodes of "30 Rock" and "Chuck," however, go above and beyond featuring a shameless homage to the man himself, Steve Jobs -- in 30 Rock's case, doing a great take on a worldchanging Apple announcement from the not-too-distant past. I won't get into the details of the episodes themselves but I have posted the clips after the break. In case you missed it, both episodes online over at Hulu.

Apple begins countdown to 1 billion App Store downloads
Apple said Friday that App Store shoppers have downloaded nearly 1 billion applications since the service launched less than one year ago and is running a promotion that will award one lucky customer with over $13,000 in Apple goodies.

Most of Apple's core products have seen some sort of refresh since last September, and it appears there aren't a whole lot left to update any time soon. Most recently, Apple unleashed Intel's Nehalem processors in its Xserve server line, which doubled the performance ... so, that's cool, but definitely cool for a limited audience of professional business users. In a more consumer-oriented vein, the next-generation iPhone won't blow anyone away until probably June or so, and the Apple TV has been mostly ignored -- only Apple knows what kind of product timeline it's on.

Apple Turns on Push Notification Services for Developer Testing

Apple notified developers yesterday that Push notifications have been turned on and that iPhone developers can now start testing their applications with the service.

Microsoft pays for inaccurate "Apple Tax" study, issues 3rd TV ad
Hoping to persuade possible Mac buyers that Apple charges an arbitrary "tax" for its computers, Microsoft has paid one analyst to create a report that portrays Windows PCs as less expensive -- even if it has to artificially pad the Mac's price and hide Windows' costs to get there.


CNBC: Apple beating recession

A panel on CNBC's Fast Money was recently remarking on AAPL's apparent invulnerability to the recession that's currently affecting the United States, noting that it's jumped 40% so far this year, outperforming the NASDAQ. J.P. Mark of Farmhouse Equity Research suggests that the excitement that persists among Apple's retail employees customers is a part of that performance.

As for the stock's immediate future, the panel and Mr. Mark point to this summer's concurrent release of iPhone OS 3.0 and a likely new iPhone model as a powerful stimulus. Finally, Mr. Mark notes that it isn't often that an electronic gadget becomes more useful and valuable over time.

I definitely agree with that. My iPhone is now almost two years old and it does much more than it did when I first opened its box. Also, if a new iPhone does appear this summer just as my current contract is expiring, I'll almost certainly buy it.

The MP3 market is saturated ?

A recent survey by Piper Jaffray of American students tends to prove that the market of the MP3 players is close to saturation. The latest figures to date show that 92% of them have already a MP3 player. The remainder of the figures shows the dominance of Apple in this market:

  • 86% have an iPod compared to 4% with a Zune and 2% with a Sony. 
  • 100% would buy a iPod if they wanted to buy a new MP3 player in the 12 next months 
  • 27% would not exceed $100 for this purchase, 34% would go up to $200, 29% up to $300 and 10% beyond that. 

This last point appears to contradict the fact that Apple has saturated this market. There is an enormous potential of renewal of the iPod classic and nano towards the ipod touch that will become the reference for all those who do not want an iPhone or more particularly to pay the subscription price.
